Emily grew up in Paris, Missouri with her elder sister Jane and baby brother Joel. She graduated from Paris High School in 1939, lettering four years in basketball. She studied business education at the University of Missouri - although never graduated, instead marrying John W. Coonrod and traveling with him during WWII. She worked at Gerber Plastics in Saint Louis until she had her first child. After her two children were away to school, she went to work as secretary at Webster Groves High School.
Emily was a dynamic and committed organizer. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother for both her sons, a choir member her entire adult life, a member of PEO, an ardent performer in PTA Shows.
